Colorful Journals and Warm Arms

One very wonderful thing about doing custom orders is that I usually get the freedom to design the item. These colorful journals are proof of just that.

These are glue-less journals made with a canvas fabric cover.The binding is sewn directly onto fabric cover.

Oh these blessed arm warmers. My friend Lauren asked me last year if I could make her a set of these. Yes, last year. It took that much procrastination to finally get these beauties finished. I have to admit, I am pretty proud of them.

I’m not sure if it comes with this time of year but life has been hectic! On the plus side it makes for good card making. With inspiration all around I bound for my stack of card stock to create bottom-less celebrations on paper. Wednesday afternoon I loaded up the car and took the five hour drive to Gilmer (a quaint town in East Texas) for the annual Yamboree Festival. A three day celebration involving parades, heifer raffles, all you can eat BBQ, carnival rides and crafts.

My sister in law Stephanie and I had been planning this for a couple of months now and with much anticipation we finally set up shop with Simply Sassy Gifts and Bright-eyed Birdie Creations.

It was a pretty slow going for business on Thursday and Friday. My biggest sale was when I sold a book safe to a kid for seven very crumpled dollars (originally priced at $15) and a plastic bracelet. Then Saturday came and made up for my lack of sales. The biggest hit were the domino pendants and Mel's record bowls.

In the end I think it was a great success. I got to spend quality time with Stephanie, meet lots of great new people, and even make a couple of trades with the local vendors.

First Fest Ever!

I had my very first festival experience yesterday.

My friend Mel decided one day that she too would like to join the world of selling her crafty wares and asked if I would like to share a booth with her at some festivals. Seeing that she is way more motivated than myself she set this up in a whims notice and we had a little over a week to come up with goodies to sell at the Herb and Art Festival in Lampasas Texas.

The night before was a frantic scurry to get everything made, glued, glittered and packed. Mike was a rock star with helping me cut out some book safes to sell. As a result he ended up with this awesome hair made from paper dust.

We got about 3 hours of sleep before it was ready to pack up and do the hour drive from Austin to Lampasas.

It could not have been a more beautiful day. To make things even better the set up was a breeze.

Being that we were in small town Texas our clientele wasn't...ideal. We got a lot of "You're not from around here are you?" or "You must be from Austin"

We didn't make as many sales as we both had imagined but in the end it was a success. We both made a small profit but more importantly we had a great experience! I definitely feel more prepared for the Yamboree festival in two weeks.

I have been so excited to introduce this new project of mine.

The inspiration came initially from an 80's party that took place at my job. I busted out my old yellow sony tape player to play classic 80's music in the bakery. I went to Goodwill and found some great tapes. After the party I sadly realized that I have no use for these cassettes. I am not one to collect clutter so the idea of keeping them around for the next random 80's party was out of the question. Then it hit me... BAM! Secret mini books!

Hidden stealthily within the cases of these classic albums are secret books.

They are perfect for writing your most personal secrets, for using as your little black book, or if you're a musician, finding inspiration to write lyrics to your next great song!

I've been working like a mad woman to get my festival goodies made so I have a decent stock of items to sell.

One of which will be these awesome game board journals. I've had this idea tucked away in my mind for some time now and wasn't able to actually do it until recently. Believe it or not it is quite hard to find game boards inexpensively. Even at the thrift store a game will cost at least $5, which isn't a lot I know but when your on a budget I could never really justify it, especially when I knew I would be tossing the rest of the game out. Then I discovered the Mecca of all discarded game boards. I have to keep this place top secret but it's basically all the items that can't be sold at the regular thrift store are thrown into bins that you then must dig through and find golden, priceless treasures that are sold by the pound. It's like Christmas.

I now have mega stock of game boards for making these sweet journals.

I tried a few different binding styles so almost all the books are bound a little differently.

Nifty New Necklaces

I have some pretty exciting news!

I have decided to get a booth at my very first festival the Yamboree. It's in the quaint town of Gilmer in good ol' East Texas. My sister in law Stephanie, who actually lives in Gilmer, mentioned that she was considering doing the festival. I thought about it and decided not to be a big chicken. This might be just the small step I need to finally dive into the pool of marketing Bright-eyed Birdie.

So, I'm going to do it, I'm going to share a booth with Stephanie and maybe or maybe not sell a couple of items. As a result of this decision I have been frantically making new items everyday.

These new necklaces are made from game pieces from a vintage Chutes and Ladders board game that I found at my favorite thrift store Eco Thrift.

I'm selling these for $10 at the festival but will sell them on the blog for $7.

I also crafted some new pendants. The square pendants are on vintage scrabble pieces which are wider and slightly heavier than the new scrabble pieces.

How to Make a Book Safe

A few years ago I was in a boutique shop in Fort Collins and I saw these book safes for the first time. What a brilliant idea I thought! I used to run an online bookstore with my mom that resulted in hundreds of books we couldn't sell. If only I had known how simple it was to make a book safe then I could have had an entire library full of secret safe books.

Last weekend I decided to learn for myself how to make my very own book safe. After scouring several awful youtube demonstrations I decided to do my first "how to" segment of my blog. I give you...

"HOW TO MAKE A BOOK SAFE"

Materials Needed:

-Hardback book, the thicker the better

-Glue that has been diluted with water

-Paint brush

-Wax Paper

-Pencil or Pen

-Exacto Knife or Box Cutter

Instructions:

1. Open your book about 30-50 pages in. These pages will not be glued. We have to give the illusion that this is a real book remember.

2. Use your paintbrush and diluted glue mixture and begin painting on the glue around the edges of the book. Feel free to keep layering on the glue.

(I used clamps to hold my unglued pages in place but this is not necessary)

3. Put a sheet of wax paper in between your unglued part and your glued part.

4. Set your book on a flat surface then put a heavy object on top. I used large heavy books. This makes sure your pages don't warp and glue flat.

5. Once your glue is dry you may now start cutting out your safe. (If you notice that you have lots of pages that did not glue together just repeat steps 2-4 and you've probably diluted your glue too much)

Mark the shape with your writing utensil that you want. A square is traditional but you can do any shape you'd like. Make sure you mark it at least an inch from the edge of the book to prevent the pages from coming unglued.

6. Using your exact knife or box cutter CAREFULLY begin to cut the area you marked. This is time consuming; if you rush it it will not look as pretty so take your time. If you notice the edges of my book you will obviously see that I rushed.

7. Once your pages are all cut out re-glue the outer edges of your book safe and now the inner edges of the inside of your cut out area.

8. Place back on your flat surface and weigh it down again until glue is dry.

Congratulations! You now have a book safe!

Feel free to cover the inside with fabric, felt, or colored paper (that's what I did).

You now have the perfect spot for your most precious, valuable possessions, like this sweet Miami Vice cassette tape.

Your secret is safe!

Five Years of Awesome

Mike and I recently celebrated our 5 year anniversary. This was a big one for me because I've always felt a marriage didn't show its true potential until the 5 year mark. We ended up celebrating by taking a weekend trip to the Texas coast. Not long after this I received a message from my dear friend Sara asking if Mike and I would like to do a photo shoot. YES! What a perfect way to document this momentous occasion! I had no idea it would have turned out this wonderful. Thank you Sara!

Say It Like You Mean It

I've been working busy as a bee on cards for the bakery, custom orders and etsy. I find that everyday I find inspiration for a new card. I can't even explain how much fun I have making custom card orders.

This "I'm Hooked on You" was a custom order for Kendall. You can't see it from the photos but when you open the card the fish comes out of the water.

"You da' Bomb" is my attempt at bringing back that term for everyday use. Trust me, it will happen.

It's no mystery that I am a fan of sharks. Don't get me wrong, I'm terrified of them but I think that is part of the appeal.

This gnarly rat is a custom order for Michelle. It's an inside joke between her and her friend. I made the Cheeto using silicon and paint.

This little boy diving in the pool was a custom card for a regular at work Kristen.

This was my first attempt at doing a magic card where you fold it then open it and the note and money switch spots. spooky.

"Alissa's Birthday Card"

I used textured velvet paper. I wanted it to feel like a real birthday party with it's cake and banner.

"Feather Bird" on a wire is my first card to go on etsy. So far not much luck selling cards on there but we'll see.

"I'm Nuts About You" is one of my FAVORITE cards, you can tell by my use of all caps how serious I am about it too. It's on etsy and may one day come into some hands that will really enjoy it as much as I do.

"Thank You Sports"

"You're Sweet" was made with felt and my attempt at simple embroidery. I think the result ended up pretty cute.

This was another custom card for Kristen it's a thank you to her fitness instructor.

"Feathery Eyed Birdie"

The perfect card for back to school!

Cat sent me these adorable birdie cut outs from Australia that I couldn't resist using for a card.

This card was inspired by my O so glamorous friend. Who doesn't like getting a card with a huge diamond on it?

"Bamboo Sunset" was made from paint samples taken from Home Depot. It's so simple yet so cool.

"Happy Travels" was made with real feathers and map-made birdie. I haven't decided where I want to sell this card yet...

Pendants for a Palace

A few years ago, while living in Colorado, Mike (my hubs) and I decided we wanted to by a house. We had a real estate agent, a mortgage broker, and total determination. We looked at probably fifty houses, put bids on three (all of which fell through) and were left with the unshaken feeling that it was just not our time to buy a house.

Here we are 3 years later in a new city with new jobs and a new found hope that we have finally found the place we want to live for good. It also helps that houses here in Austin are about half the cost of those in Colorado. We've decided to try our search once more. I've decided to call this post "Pendants for a Palace" on the sole fact that we need more funds for our down payment.

My pendants are inexpensive, made with love, and each have their own unique style. Some of you may have seen some of these before but if you look closely you will see some new ones too!

As most of you know, I spend most of my days working at a bakery here in Austin. It's so nice to be able to help others celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. with sweets and goodies. I wondered why we didn't have any greeting cards for people to buy for these occasions?

Which is why Bright-eyed Birdie is now the sole card dealer, no, lets say card smuggler, that sounds cooler at Rise and Shine Bakery.

A Dabble in Scrabble

Monopoly has been my long-standing favorite board game for many years. Yes, I know what you're thinking, but you've never played my highly competitive version with fancy rules and sound effects, it's quite thrilling really.

But as of recently my new favorite board game is Scrabble. It must run in my blood. When I play with my grandma I have to play at least three games or until she wins (she's a sore loser), and I have a mother who sits at the kitchen table reading the dictionary to come up with the highest scoring words. My passion does not run that deep but I have to admit, I fervently check my Facebook Scrabble games (of which I have about 5 going at once) and every time I go visit my Mom and Grandma I play at least 4 games within a 24 hour period.

Which is why when I found a travel size Scrabble game at the thrift store I jumped at the idea of using it for jewelry purposes.

Behold, my creations...

The bracelets are stretchy and made with glass beads. I am selling them for $5 and have most letters so it can say anything you would like. I recommend a 3-4 letter word, anything longer and you can't read it, unless you have abnormally large wrists in which case I would make you a bracelet that says F-R-E-A-K so you could read it.

Wedding Bells Will Be Ringing

If anyone has been keeping track of my blogs you will know that my dear friend Shannon has fervently been planning her wedding.

Well, the day has finally come. She is now Mrs. Shannon Falbo. It's been such a great artistic experience for me being able to make her bridal shower invites, flower girl gifts, ringer bearer gifts, and even her and Vince's gift too!

This is the card I made for the happy couple.

Made from velum, wedding paper, and black card stock.

After much thought I decided to make Shannon and Vince a photo album to encase all of their memories together.

The most difficult part was the binding. I had to use a drill to get through all the layers of pages then try three different types of ribbon before I found the right one that fit. I think it ended up looking pretty good. I used the wedding colors for the book and was very grateful that they had awesome colors to work with.

I used my amateur calligraphy skills to add some pzazz to some of the pages

When Shannon called and asked if I could make a ring bearer pillow I jumped on the idea. I am a beginner seamstress so I figured a small pillow would be something I couldn't screw up too badly.

I have to admit, I think my mom would be proud.

I also made a couple of miniature ring pillows for a "Build a Bear" that was a gift to AJ, the most awesome ringbearer.

Oh dang, I just got that! RingBEARer.

On an ending note, I want to wish Shannon and Vince a big congratulations and wishes that their love together truely will be happily ever after.

There's a New Bird in Town

For months now I have been wanting to re-vamp my blog. Here I want to be this unique flower yet I have the same template as 2.4 million other bloggers. Do that many people blog? Well, in this story they do.

My darling husband (the mastermind of all things computer related) showed me googles new easy-ish to use "create your very own unique template" program.

Now despite what my job resume says, I am really really terrible at all things computer related. I've tried to figure out Adobe Illustrator and Photo Shop and all of those artsy fartsy computer programs with no success. I can't even begin to tell you how frustrating it was to try and create a logo using the paint program. I thought to myself "This would be so much easier if I could use actual cutting and pasting skills!" not the fake giga-pixel kind! So, that is what I did.

I spent the better part of my Saturday morning cutting, pasting, and using my real fingers not that silly computer finger to come up with a new Bright-eyed Birdie logo.

And Bloogle (blogger/google) I just made that up, was clever enough to come up with there new fancy template making program for me to finally have a blog to be proud of.

If anyone has any constructive criticism I would love to hear it. I have been staring at this thing so long I already feel like I should change it again.

Jolly Ollie Journals

I found this amazing fabric at a garage sale last summer and finally found an inspired way to use it to its full potential.

I've made several journals since my beginning days of book-making (taught by my oh so creative friend melissa http://melissasmanycreations.blogspot.com )

This is my first time to make a "glue-less" hand-sewn fabric journal and I must admit it was a fun adventure. I used a decorative stitch on the edging of the journal to add class and cuteness.

I couldn't help but use my old-timey typewriter for the bright-eyed birdie signature.

I used the long stitch to bind the signatures together.
I like being able to see the stitches on the back, it also makes for a nice ribbon hold.

The big one!
I used a scrap of vinyl and my cute brown fabric to construct this beauty.
Although the book is not real leather, the black cord holding it together is a soft leather deer skin.

I used the same long stitch for this book also. I love the contrast of tan and black stitched on the spine.

I got a request to make a couple of journals for the flower girls at Shannon's wedding.

She wanted something similar to the bible cover I made for Sara.

So out popped these bright embroidered books for Brianna and Ashlyn!

Custom Pendants & Metal Stamping

I recently purchased an over-priced metal stamping alphabet set and immediately set about trying to stamp everything and see what works best. The answer is metal, metal stamps best...big surprise.

Anyhow, after stamping a few spoons I realized that a more useful metal to stamp would be charms that could be worn on your very own necklace.

It's been perfect for the custom pendants that I've been making.I recently made this one for my dear friend Kendall it was comissioned by her boyfriend for their anniversay.

This necklace went to another dear friend of mine Shannon who is studying hard to finish PA school. The anatomical heart seems very fitting for her future profession and is now specifically hers with the "S" charm

I've been wanting to post this for days now but I had to wait until it made it's trip across the seas to Australia first. I didn't want the surprise to be completely lost.

I had so much fun making this card. In the process of making this card I thought up about 5 new card ideas too! Which is good because I've got about 15+ birthdays to card for this summer.

Creations Under the Sun

A couple of months ago I got very excited about the sunny weather and began my seedlings indoors for my future garden. Then the garden never happened. There was always a good excuse like rain, house guests, or the BBC "Life" series (it's seriously amazing); so alas my little seedling sprouted then half of them died because they didn't have enough room for their little roots to grow.

I was determined to save the remaining seedling and start my garden! No big deal right? Just dig up some ground and throw them in. Wrong!

I found the perfect spot in my back yard, one with sunlight but not too much sunlight and began the first threshing of the earth. And when I say earth, I really mean rock/clay. Something I thought would take about an hour ended up taking three days.
Take note of the very small garden plot now check out the amount of rock that was pain stakingly removed. My arms hurt just thinking about it!I decided I had to do some sort of artistic touch to my new, much appreciated garden so I quickly drew up my very own plant markers.

Now those of you who are garden connoisseurs please don't judge the placement of my plants. I realize that they will probably all strangle themselves or die from too much sun or not enough water but for now, let me bask in the glory of a job done adequately.

Bright-eyed Birdie Has Spread Her Wings

I don't know if I was nervous to make this jump or what, but I've been gathering together new material to get my creations out to the world and it seems to have taken forever. I suppose I just wanted everything to be perfect for this next step in my art. Today I finally made the big jump and put my jewelry on display at the spa next to the bakery I work at. It is such a great place and everyone who works there is FANTASTIC I feel really honored that they are allowing my little gems to gain some attention.

Shannon's Shower Invites

These are not the best photos in the world but I was running out of daylight and time. There are two separate shower invitations, one for a lingerie shower and the other for a brunch shower. Overall I think they all turned out pretty good.

It doesn't get better than black lace and glitter.

Oh and don't forget rhinestones too!

These are for the brunch shower. I used a wax seal to create imprints of love on each invitation. As you can see each invitation is different.

This was also a great opportunity for me to work on my calligraphy. It was a lot of fun. Man I wish these photos weren't so terrible!

I am so happy it's spring time I couldn't resist showing the surprising blossoms the tree in our front lawn has produced.

If you are interested in ordering invitations from me I am very flexible and much cheaper than most online stores. My prices vary depending on size and construction time but the cost is usually between $.50-$1.50 per card. Also, keep in mind friends, family, and followers always get a discounted price.

There is this great salon that is next door to the bakery I work at. One of the managers suggested that I display my jewelry there on consignment. I was absolutely thrilled then I realized that I have no form of display for my jewelry. I've been hanging them on a yard stick from my wall and that wouldn't work too well in a classy salon. I scoured some garage sales and a few thrift stores and found these great frames. I gave them an antique look by sanding them down in places then attached some hooks from the back. I think it worked out pretty well for the most part. I will bring them into the salon later this week and see what they say!

This summer I happened across a very old kitchen cabinet/desk. It has been an absolute treat. There is a cutting board built in and plenty of drawers to hold my little craft knick-knacks. After moving to Austin it has truly made my space a place of inspiration. It sits under the window that looks out into the woods behind our house. Which is where I came across my first blossoms of springtime. I just couldn't resist sharing my inspirational space with all of you!

This pale yellow typewriter was given to me by a coffee shop customer in Colorado. I don't even remember their name but I wish they knew how much I really do love it and use it!

ha ha ha...

I couldn't help but take a sprig of blossom to adorn my area.

It makes me so happy and it smells so good!

Bling Bling Button Ring

I've been mildly obsessed with antique buttons lately. I find them so fascinating, each one is so different from the next. My sister recently sent me a large jar of antique buttons as part of a barter (seriously, I love bartering) and the treasures within that jar were amazing! I decided to collage these buttons together, with the help of some beads and thread to create some unique one of a kind antique button rings.

I used a silver coated ring and used a "probably not safe to inhale" grade of super strength glue to adhere the buttons.

It has been such an adventure digging through my jars of buttons to find the one's that have the perfect character to wear around.

I had only planned on making about 20 pendants this time and ended up with around 50! It meant more work for me but more pendants for you! I've got some fantastic images that are kind of strange and all kinds of cool.

For anyone who hasn't seen my pendants before I will explain how they are made. I use miniature dominoes to create these beauties. They are all about one inch in length. Each domino is different and has a different number on the back. I seal the image with a name brand sealant then coat it with resin which is durable and gives it a glass-like look. I then drill a hole in the top and secure a bail in there for necklace holding purposes.

The round pendants are made from wooden game pieces and have random numbers on the back. These are both sealed, coated, and bailed the same as the dominoes.

Each pendant comes with a ribbon which is not shown in the pictures.

Sara's Bible with a New Cover!

I wanted to wait until Sara got her book back to post this so as not to ruin the surprise. But now that she has it and more importantly likes it, I feel safe to show off my handy work.

Sara contacted me a couple of weeks ago about repairing the binding on her much loved Bible. I accepted the challenge and had some thinking to do. I had forgotten not only how thick Bibles are but how thin their pages are. I wish I had taken before/after shots now that I think about it. Any who...After much research and pondering I came up with a nice sturdy hardcover for Sara's Bible. I hand embroidered her name on the front to personalize it just for her. The colors were inspired by the above photo of adorable Sona and Sara.

Funky Button-Up Leg Warmers for Suzie

A few days ago my aunt asked for some warm leg warmers to help with her cold ankle dilemma. The problem she had was the difficulty of getting legs warmers on and off while wearing shoes. I wish I could claim this genius idea of using buttons on leg warmers but it was all my Aunt Suzie. I found bright colors that complimented each other and ended up with a really fun and warm end product. Hope you like them!

Custom Made Invitaions

I've been trying my hand at these pendants and jewelry and its been a lot of fun. But I must admit my first love is paper. I find so much freedom with paper, knowing I can create so many different things in such a variety of colors, shapes, and designs. Last year I did the wedding invitations for my brother's wedding and loved it so much. I made these prototypes for my friends wedding that is happening later this year. She had sent me a few pictures she found online and I went into action putting in the appropriate wedding colors and making a few adjustments to give them my own personal flair.

Let it be known that I can create almost any style of invitation, be it for a wedding, birthday, shower, anniversary, or even just a handmade card for someone you care for. I just bought tons of handmade paper at the World Market by my house. They are closing that store so I got it for a steal! I'm really excited to see what I can cut, pasted, and sew together.

Antique Button Necklace

I was in Denton a couple of weeks ago and was able to get an opportunity to walk around the square. This is always a special treat because Jupiter has the best lattes in Denton, seriously everyone else can suck it, and secondly because of the mini mall. For any outsiders who haven't been to the Denton mini mall it is not so much a mall as it is a hoard of knic-knacks, antiques, and stale pretzels. While at the mini mall I came across a small jar of antique buttons, most still having the yellowed thread in them from when they were cut off some old worn blouse. I have been brainstorming since then as to how I could do justice to these buttons that are made from shells and bone. Somehow or other I came up with this! Let me know what you think.

After hours of planning and toiling I've finally completed more pendants. As you will see most of these are made from dominoes. I had so much fun picking out the pictures for these pendants. Also, a lot more time and effort went into making them.

Instead of using the glaze substance I used on the last pendants I decided to go with resin which is very resilient and water resistant for those necklace wearing folks who just forget to take them off before a shower, like me.

Also, unlike the last batch of pendants, I bought a small drill bit so the bails are screwed in instead of glued on.

Skeletons in the Closet

When I was younger I was a big collector. I had collections of things I found fascinating and then I had collections of things just because. I was no light weight collector either. I had stamps, porcelain dolls, nail polish, rocks, Care Bears, My Little Pony's, shells, cow figurines (don't ask), beads, magazines, hats, Barbies, and many more. One of my continuous favorites from my collecting is my set of antique skeleton keys.
As with most of my collections they've either been tossed or crammed into a box only to be opened maybe every five years.
I've decided what's the point? If they can't be enjoyed why have them?
I've dusted off my box of skeleton keys and given them a new look that now everyone can possibly enjoy.
I've decided to sell each necklace for $10.

Kathy's Wrist Warmers

The dead grass in my back yard really accentuates the beauty of these fingerless gloves. I made these for my aunt who asked for hot pink and black wrist warmers.
I weaved some hot pink polka dotted ribbon through the crochet stitching.
I hope she likes them! I am a fan of wearing wrist warmers. Because my arms are long like a tree sloth I can never find coats that are long enough in the arms. The wrist warmer protects that little bit between the fingers and sleeve, so nice.

Super Warm Knitted Neckwarmer

I am a big fan of neck warmers this season. They are easy to make and fun to wear! You get to keep your warm neck without having to worry about how to wrap your scarf up.

This neckwarmer is particularly soft, like a cloud on a dreary winter day, but warm.
I used a stockinette stitch and a big button to give it a hip look.

Allison's Winter Wonderland hat

This hat was so much fun to make.

Allison hat custom ordered this hat to be made (Thanks Allison!)

She wanted the fun pom pom and lavender color.

It was my first attempt at doing a pom pom which ended up being easy and highly entertaining.

I did a blanket stitch around the edge to add an accent of lavender to the hat.

I think the end result was great! And no, I'm not checking my rack out, just showing off the hat.
